Keep it simple and buy local
So you’re looking to buy some new optics and you’re trying to decide whether to buy from a New Zealand retailer or to buy offshore, but you’re just not sure which way to go. Here’s just a few of the reasons why you should always buy local:
What you see is what you pay - free delivery and no customs charges
Seen an amazing low price on a US website that just seems too good to be true? Chances are it probably is. By the time you’ve reached checkout, they’ve added $50USD for delivery and then once it eventually reaches New Zealand you may be liable for customs charges. As a rule of thumb, if the GST payable on the cost of your product in NZ dollars works out to be $60 or more, you’ll have to pay any duty and GST plus an Import Entry Transaction Fee and MPI levy to get your product released from customs.
We list all of our prices in New Zealand dollars and they all include GST and shipping. The price you see when you reach checkout is always the same as the price that tempted you to buy the product in the first place. We never add any extra shipping charges at checkout.
Want to accurately compare the price of products between the US and NZ? Find out more about the shipping fees involved, and then check what customs fees and GST you’ll be expected to pay on the What’s My Duty website. You’ll be surprised how much the product may end up costing you when you decide to shop offshore.
We’ll honour the manufacturers warranty without you having to post your product overseas
All of the products we sell are covered by a manufacturers warranty against manufacturing defects. In the unlikely situation that you have a problem with your product, we’re just a phone call or email away and we’ll be able to guide you through the simple returns procedure. Your product won’t have to go far before we repair or replace it and you’ll have it back to you in no time.

FAQ's About Buying Local in NZ
What is the message behind "keep it simple and buy local”?
When it comes to buying potentially ‘big ticket’ items such as binoculars, rifle scope and spotting scopes, there’s always a temptation to try and save yourself some money by finding the item online as cheap as you can. This can sometimes mean opting to purchase the item from an overseas website and getting the item shipped to New Zealand. This may seem like a great idea at the time, but additional costs such as GST and import fees are often forgotten about until it’s too late and you’re stung with a bill before customs will release the item to you. In addition, many of the brands that we represent at ScopeUout will only support the New Zealand warranty if the item is purchased from one of their authorised importers such as ourselves. Due to these two rather major factors, we believe that choosing to purchase from a local NZ retailer such as ourselves is always the best option.
Why is it important to keep things simple when buying products?
At ScopeUout we keep the buying process as simple as possible for you. We appreciate that you’ve probably got better things to do, so we work tirelessly to make buying online at ScopeUout simple and seamless.
What are the benefits of buying local products?
By buying locally sourced products, you can be sure that they have come through the right channels. This means that we have bought them from the authorised importer of the brand for New Zealand and that they’re not grey or parallel imports. By buying from us at ScopeUout you can be rest assured that the products you buy have a full NZ warranty that will be backed on NZ soil if there is ever an issue.
Are there any disadvantages to buying local products?
Unfortunately, the upfront price that you see on local New Zealand websites can sometimes seem a bit higher than other offshore websites. That’s because things like freight and GST all come at a cost and our suppliers, who import the products into NZ have to include these in their costs. Although prices on offshore websites can seem cheaper on the surface, they usually don’t include the costs of shipping or the GST that you will have to pay when the items arrive in NZ. Once you’ve added this on to the price, the cost the items purchased locally and offshore can often be comparative. The beauty of buying them locally, even if they are a tad more expensive, is that the delivery will be quicker and if something is to go wrong, it will be resolved on Kiwi soil.
What types of products can I buy locally?
All of our binoculars, spotting scopes, riflescopes and indeed our entire range is available to purchase from one of our local warehouses. There are a couple of products in our range that we have to bring in on an as needed basis from one of our Australian warehouses, but we always make this clear from the outset so that you can account for any longer delivery timeframes.
How can I find local products to buy?
It’s simple - just browse through our entire range of sports optics on our ScopeUout website and be safe in the knowledge that you’ll be buying them from our small, family run, Wellington based business.
Are there any incentives for buying local products?
Buying locally sourced products means that they’ll be delivered quicker, there won’t be any hidden costs, they’ll be covered by a full NZ warranty and you’ll be supporting a local, family operated business.
